NEXT TRIP: The boat is safely tucked away in heated winter storage...
Sept 17 The big Salmon are in the channel. Go get 'em!
Sept 7 Well I haven't seen that many boats out fishing for a while. There must have been 40 boats perch fishing off Castle Park and just as many salmaon fishing strait out of Holland. I went on Eric's boat this morning, and we fished from 7:30 - 10:30 and only caught one steelhead. It was great morning to be out fishing, no waves and sunny.
Sept 1 There were a lot of boats out fishing last night. If you weren't out there, get out there today/tonight. The water is flat, the sun is out and the fish our biting!!!! We fished from 6-9 PM and had action all evening. By 7:30 we were 7 for 8 and things were looking great for fishing the sunset. The action kept up, but didn't heat up too much over sunset, but the big difference was that we couldn't land any of the fish. From 7:30 to 9 we probably went 0 for 5 or 6 and missed a couple of nice big fish. Of the 7 we caught we had 5 kings, a Coho, and a Lake trout. Most fishe were between 5 and 10 lbs. We had some bonus excitement as we took two on one line (laker & king) as both the rigger and slider got fish. We fished a big circle pattern 2 times between 125 and 155 FOW and didn't have to look very hard for fish. It seemed that there was a line of boats fishing 160 to 180 FOW water, but we never made it that deep. Fish bit on everything, blue mirage flies, green j-plugs, orange-black spoons, riggers, dipsys, copper, and lead.
Aug 31 Went out in the middle of the afternoon and did pretty well. It was a beautiful sunny day, and the water was flat. I fished alone, from 1 to 5 pm and went 4 for 4. All were kings between 5 and 10 lbs. 2 on downriggers, one on a orange and black spoon on slider and the other on magnum white/black flecks/green stripe 80 down. 2 came on flies on dipsys - homemade blue mirage and green/blue mirage. I fished bewteen 100 and 170 FOW with most action around 120 going E and West.

Aug. 28

I fished on Jim's boat last night from 6:30 - 9:30. The fish were hungry and begun biting shortly after getting lines set. We had a hard time keeping them on the line as we had many technical difficulties/equipment failure/user errors. Anyway, we ended 2 for 9 with most action between 120-130 FOW. 3 hits came on a Green J-plug on lead core. 2 came on a Magnum Blue Dolphin 70 down. However, the same lure on Lead didn't get a bite. We lost one fish because it bent the hook, another because the round ring of a swivel broke, and another time we had a leader break. This was not a stellar performance for a couple of experienced fisherman at the end of the year. Oh well. Anyway, the fish are biting! Go Catch 'em!
Aug. 18 We had an Employee fishing trip after work, fishing from 6 - 9:30. There was a bit of action, but we had a hard time keeping the fish on the line. The first fish hit the downrigger and went straight for the dipsy and got Tom hung up in this line and then released. Later, a foul hooked steelhead took off with the copper line and planer board as it took nearly spooled Rob. Finally, Terry caught a nice 8 lb king to get the skunk out. We ended 1 for 7 fishing mostly around 90 - 110 FOW. Carl, slip A-41, had a better night going 5 for 5 fishing a litlle deeper around 120 - 140 FOW.
Aug. 13 Report from A-1: fished this morning caught 2 nice coho and 10lb king at first light then nothing else. Green flasher fly on downrigger, modified blue dolphin on other rigger, michigan blueberry on 300 copper. Flat calm. -Dan
Aug. 13 We spent a couple nights in St. Joe and South Haven but fished this morning on our way home, between S. Haven and Saugatuck. We ended 3 for 5, with three good size fish: one king, one steelhead, and one laker. All came on downriggers and spoons around 100 FOW. 2 came 70 down on a magnum white spoon with black marks all over it with a green zigzag stripe going down it. The steelhead came on a slider, on an orange and black spoon that hadn't been used in years. I lost one fish on dipsy and fly because of a swivel malfunction -- either it was operator error and I forgot to snap it or the fish straighten it out -- either way it was very frustrating.
Aug. 6th Report from A-5: Fished out of Holland on 8/6 from 7:00-9:30 P.M. for a quick last minute solo trip. I was only able to run 3 lines as I was by myself, the fish didn't hit until 8:30 and I got a double on a downrigger and dipsy landed both being 14lb and 18lb kings. I then lost one at the boat on a 300 copper probably about 12lbs. Fished from 90-110 FOW about 75 down. From sounds of radio chatter most people were doing great.
Aug. 5th Report from the "Fishing Poles": Fished 8/5 7:00 to dark with alot of others on the water. Went 3 for 7, all kings 7 to 14 pounds. Flies and spoons both working on dipseys and riggers. Fished 100 to 115 FOW, 65 to 85 down. Alot of warm water all the way to the bottom rigger. Fish were more active as we found cooler water. Silver, blue and green combinations were working best. Capt. Jim.
Aug. 4th We only fished from 7 to 9 PM and the fishing was still a little slow, straight out of Holland in 100 - 120 FOW. However, bro-in-law Dave was fighting a 20 lb king for about a half hour. The fish came 180 back on a dipsy set on 1, with a sour apple fly (green mirage type) on a green with pearl fishcatcher. Great Fight, Great Fish! Hopefully we get a couple more next time.
Aug. 1-2 Unfortunately, the Big Red Classic tournament was cancelled both days because of waves. All though 75% of the boats may have been OK fishing, they had to cancel it to make sure everyone was safe. On Saturday, it was cancelled after 2 hours of fishing, and we had caught 1 fish. Most boats had 2 fish, and the fishing was slow overall. On Sunday, it was delayed then cancelled. We went fishing anyway and caught a king and a Brown straight out of Holland, fishing between 10 and 1 around 100 FOW.
July 31 Practice day for the Big Red Classic. The bite was slow and we went 2 of 4 between 7 and 10:30 AM. I talked with several people, and the fishing was predominantly slow this morning, so tomorrow may be a challenge. 3 or our 4 bites came on one magnum spoon, 65 down.
July 23 Went on a quick dinner cruise/fishing trip with Kris. We caught a 6 lb steelhead on a green and white spoon on lead and a small laker on a similar set up. Missed one big fish on a dipsy. All this was between 6:30 and 8 pm around 140-150 FOW headed North to Port Sheldon.
July 23 Report from A-5: Had 9 lines in the water by 5:45 this morning and fished until 11 without a hit. Tried different depths, speed, lures, directions and could not get a thing to go. We fished from 80-130 fow and marked fish deep but not as many as we were marking the last couple days. -Kort
July 22 Kris and I fished from 6:15-9:30 pm. We had never, ever marked so many fish before! There was a constant stream of fish between 130-150 FOW, not shallower, but maybe deeper as we did not go any deeper. We ended 4 of 5, with 3 kings and a laker. These fish were all between 3-7 lbs. At sunset, we lost one monster after it ripped 200 plus feet out on the dipsy, then bent the hook straight back. For the amount of fish out there, it was surprisingly slow. Only one other boat on the water. Hits came on a Magnum Blue Dolphin 60 down, A strange looking yellow/pink/silver Magnum spoon 70 down, that Aaron recommended at the tackle store, and the other 3 hits came on a Light Blue Fly that I made. Nothing on lead lines.
July 22 Report from A-5: 0630-1130, We went 5/9 with 4 kings one at 12lbs, 14lbs, 18lbs, and 20lbs and a steelhead at 10lbs. Fishing inside 100 ft seemed to work best, and then the fish are at scattered depths from there anywhere from 15-70 down. -Kort
July 21 Report from A-5: 0645-1000, We went 2/4 with 2 kings at 20lbs, and 22lbs -Kort
July 20 Report from A-47: Went out early this morning and had lines in at 5:45. 70 to 90 ft - 6 rips in the first half-hour and things really slowed after 8:00 am. Spinners and flies were the ticket - greens and blues. Ended up with 3 and threw a laker back.

July 17

Paul and I had a reel fun trip Friday morning We were headed to Grand Haven for the afternoon and fished all the way there, from 7:30 to 12:00, between 70 and 100 FOW. We only caught 3 fish, but they were all big and fun to catch. The first was a 10 lb Steelhead caught just north of Holland and went on a green and white spoon on lead core. Next, just before Port Sheldon, we took a 14 lb King on a downrigger, 65 down. It came on a Kevorkian Bubble spoon, that Aaron from Lakeshore Outfitters recommended the day before. Next, after just passing Port Sheldon, we took a 16 lb king on a Sour Apple Fly. This fish screamed out to 400 feet before we were able to start bring it in. It was a bit waving, but fishable. Good times...
July 15 Walked out to the pier, just before sunset. Fish were jumping all over about a hundred yards off the South Pier. It could be worth a try fishing around the channel.
July 14 Report from the "Fishing Poles": Not much different than last Friday. Fished 6:30 to dark. Put four in the box, one laker, one steelhead and two kings. Biggest king went @ 10 lbs, others 6 to 7 pounds. Caught on flies and spoons in 70 to 120 FOW. Blue, green, white and silver baits working best on dispeys, riggers and lead core. Marked allot of fish at all depths however the bite was light. Beautiful night to be on the water. Capt. Jim.
July 13 We took a family fishing trip from 6 - 8:30 PM. Kris and Ryan saw the first fish jumping all around before we even noticed that we had it hooked. It was a good thing they were paying attention, because it ended up being a nice 12 lb steelhead. We caught one more steelhead before we were done, about 6 lbs. Both were caught on lead core, one on a green, whit & orange spoon and the other on a green and white spoon. No action on dipsys, riggers or flies. We headed South towards saugatuck and didn't get action until we got there, although we marked fish the entire way between 70 - 80 fow. We got enough fish for our dock party on Saturday, so we stopped fishing a little early.
July 10 Report from the "Fishing Poles": Fished Friday evening 7:30 to dark. Went 4 for 6, one laker, one steelhead and two kings. Biggest king went @ 14 lbs, others 4 to 8 pounds. Caught on flies and spoons in 90 to 120 FOW. Blue, green and silver baits working best on dispeys and lead core. Capt. Jim.
July 9 Kort (A-5) was fishing in the evening from 7:00-9:30 again it was very slow. From radio chatter I heard of one fish caught and only a couple hits, we fished from 60-120. We had one hit on a 150 copper with a nbk magnum probably a steelhead ripped line and jumped 3 times in a matter of 15 seconds and it was gone. The other hit was on a 300 copper with a carmel dolphin.
July 9 We ended up fishing with my friends kids from the sea wall and caught a bunch of sheephead, and a couple bluegill and a bass. 2 of the sheephead were over 5 lbs and nearly dragged the kids with their little Micky Mouse poles in the water!
July 9 Rumors say that salmon are being caught near the channel in Saugatuck. Bait fish are in close.
July 9 Kort & Steve (A-5) went out this morning and fished from 0630-1100(very slow), but managed one 5lb King in 110 fow on a 150' copper nbk magnum and had one other release but no sign of a fish. We fished from 70-130 fow. All radio chatter seemed slow (0-1 fish). The last hour we fished just off the pier as we marked many fish on our way out this morning but no luck. Hopefully things pick up soon or become more consistent. I am planning on heading back out tonight and will let you know. We also went Monday morning and went 2/2 one small coho and a nice 20lb king, but also very slow. Fish came in 70-110 fow
July 6 Fished on Jim's boat from 7PM to 10PM. Went 3 for 5, all Kings in 100 - 135 FOW. Spoons and Flies. One nice 14 lb king. Very slow until sunset, then things picked up.
July 5 Good Fishing on Flies and Spoons reported in 100 to 130 feet of Water
June 10 We fished Capt. Jim's boat today from 6-10 AM. Like the last time, we set up in the wrong place. We started around 100 FOW and took a small king, but things went dead until we got over 200 FOW. We ended 3 of 6 with one Laker. Interestingly, 3 of the hits were on the copper line, two on a lead line, and the other on a down-rigger. Flies and dipsys were quiet.
June 7 This report was sent in from Port Sheldon: Caught two late Sunday morning. Long dry spell before we hit in 150 feet of water, 50 feet down in front from the Port Sheldon stacks. Hit on Blue Dolphin and a bluish spoon with an eye on it.
June 6 Capt. Jim, reported good fishing and a lot being marked on the fish finder around 110-130 FOW. He ended his trip with 5 fish.
June 5 It was confirmed by 2 different fisherman at the marina, that the fish were out deep. As far out as 230 FOW. We tried deep and only picked up 1 Lake Trout. But on the way back in, things started to happen all of a sudden and within 15 minutes we picked up 4 more around 100 FOW. Dipsies, Lead, and Riggers all took fish on spoons and flies. We ended 5 for 6, fishing between 7:00 and 10:00 PM. Most action was right after the sun set.
June 4 Just a relaxing afternoon trip with my wife. We headed deep and back again, catching our only fish in 160 FOW on a blue dolphin, 80 down. We just fished for a couple hours and went from 100 to 200 feet with out much of anything showing up on the fish finder.
May 29 Great night for fishing, but Jim and I only saw 2 other boats on the water. Waves were 1-3 feet. We fished from 6:30 to 9:30 and ended 4 for 4, all kings. The largest was 15 pounds. With the net securely in the dockbox back at the marina, Jim (the fish whisperer), slowly guided the huge fish by the leader to the swim platform, lulled the fish into submission with unintelligible mumblings, and then snatched it up by the tail with his right hand. Who needs a net? We took 3 fish on downriggers (50 - 60 down) and blue dolphin spoons and one came on a dipsy and green/blue fly. 100 - 125 FOW.
May 23

It was a slow evening on my boat. We started around 6PM in 100 FOW and headed as deep as 180. Finally on our way back shallower, we hooked up around 110 and again in 90. Both on spoons off the down rigger at 55 down. One was on the slider. Green and Silver and Green and Gold.

Dan (Slip A-1) had a much better evening and ended 4 for 5 around 120 FOW. Best fishing was up higher. Fish were biting on lead line, dipsy's, and riggers.

May 15 It was a great first trip out. We only fished from 6:00 to 8:30 in the evening, but had plenty of action. We finished 7 for 9, including 6 Kings and 1 Lake Trout. All the salmon were good size, between 5 and 15 lbs. Lead Core, Dipsys, Downriggers, Spoons, and Flies all were taking fish. Blue Dolphin and Green Dolphin Spoons took multiple hits.
