  NEXT TRIP: Spring 2009
Oct. 10 We gave it one more try for the year and had a very slow morning, but ended 2 for 3, both kings. We fished all over from 80 - 160 feet with little going on. There were about a dozen boats out, and most of the boats seemed to be fishing all over, like they were also unable to pinpoint a good depth or find where the fish were hanging out.
Sept. 20 Jim and I fished the Holland Pierheads from 7-9 AM and only caught 1, 10 lb king. Most boats looked like they were in 50 FOW or out deeper.
Sept. 6 The salmon are now in the channel.
Aug. 28 The fishing is GREAT! We fished from 6:00 - 9:30 and were 10 for 15, all Kings. Most fish were around 5 lbs. We fished between 80 and 130 FOW and had most action on flies and J-plugs. There were many boats fishing in shallow, and back at the marina, one boat fishing in 35-50 FOW reported catching 7 fish. The fish are everywhere and hungry. Go Fishing. Do it. Do it.
Aug. 23 Although I haven't been fishing this week, the fishing still has been good. Reports have been coming in from boats fishing shallow, less than 50 FOW, and boats out deeper, past 100 FOW.

Aug. 15

This past week the Perch have been biting off and on with big numbers taken between 10 and 40 feet of Water both North and South of the Holland Channel. Perch have been of small size keepers, with few jumbos. My family did not have good success.

Salmon reports have been excellent this passed week. Fishing the pierheads and in shallow at sunrise has been very good, then heading out deeper after 8AM. Fish are still biting in that 100-130 range and many are down deep, 80 feet or more on the riggers.

One group at the marina this week was at the fish cleaning station after going 19 for 22 on Tuesday Morning. That included a 16 lb. brown!

Aug. 10 Jim and I fished out of Holland from 6AM to 10AM. We marked a lot of fish between 100-130 feet but were only able to 1 for 2, landing a 5 lb king. We fished all the way to the piers trying to see if the fish moved in. We didn't have any luck, but it looked like several boats were trolling the outskirts of the Lake Macatawa mud line in 40-50 FOW. At least one of them had a fish on when we passed through.
Aug. 1-5 We took a family boat trip to the Pentwater and Ludington areas. We fished a little anytime we were near Little Sable Point. It doesn't matter what time of day it is, or if you know where the fish are biting, you just have to spend an hour or two fishing Little Sable Point and the fish are sure to bite. Lots of fun and good fishing...
July 31 Well, I can't give away many secrets today, as the Big Red Classic approaches. However, the fishing was great this morning. We were out from 6-9 AM and went 8 for 9, all Kings. Lead Core and Copper were the least effective and most of the action was between 7 and 8 AM. The Kings were of all sizes.
July 23 We only fished from 7:30 - 8:30 PM as the large 3-5 foot waves and strong current made it difficult to keep the lines in the water. Before we gave in to the conditions, we were 1 for 2 bringing in a 5 lb king on a Blue Dolphin Magnum, 60 down.
July 22 Fished from 7:15 to 10PM through some rocky & rolly 2-5 foot seas. We ended 4 for 7 with 3 of the fish coming within 5 minutes of each other as the sun went down. All lures and lines took hits. We stayed in the 100-130 FOW and were fishing from 40-80 feet down. Fish were of all sizes, and unfortunately the biggest fish were the ones that got away.
July 19 Fished Saturday evening and went 3 for 5. One nice steelhead and two big kings. Fished 80 to 120 FOW and marked allot of bait on the bottom. Missed fish came of riggers and boated fish came on dipsys with both flies and spoons. Greens, blues and whites worked best. Capt Jim - The Fishing Poles
July 14 Well the big fish are biting! We only ended 2 for 7, but it was just about all the action that my wife and I could take. The one monster took about 15 minutes to bring in, after it ripped out about 250 feet of line off a dipsy that was set at 140. This king was 18 lbs (on the scale and photo proof). My homemade gold and green fly was in shreds by the time it came in. The other monster came on a homemade green and clear fly and green spindoctor. Set at 150 back on 1, this one screamed out 100+ feet of line and got tangled in the lead line. This 15 lb king took flight like it was steelhead at 200 feet behind the boat. The action picked up as we neared sunset and reports on the radio were very, very good. If you've been waiting to fish, or haven't gone out because of gas, this might be the right time to go. You'll get your payback in lbs of salmon ($6.99/lb at the grocery store).
July 12 Reports came in of good fishing and big kings being caught (15lbs and over).
July 9 Its great being able to go out a couple of days in a row because its easier to find the fish the second day. So when we started at 7:45 PM, we went right out to 125 FOW and started catching fish. Unlike the night before, the fish wanted nothing to do with Red or Orange spoons. All other colors were working and we quickly had a Steelhead, a Lake Trout, and a King in the Box. Things slowed down a little bit and we ended the night around 10:15 going 5 for 6. The one Steelhead was big and strong at 8 lbs and the biggest king was 10 lbs. We marked all kinds of fish as we trolled towards the pierheads, but only got one small shaker to bite as we headed in.
July 8 Fished from 7:00 - 9:30 PM. We had some pretty good action around 8 PM in 125 FOW. Unfortunately we couldn't put one in the boat and ended 0 for 4. Three of the fish were on for a while and we lost one right behind the net. Fish were only biting on Red and Orange colored spoons, and mostly on the downriggers.
July 6 Spoke with a fishing customer this morning. Fishing was slow, but they boated one big king over 10 lbs.
July 5

Fished from 7:30 to 10:00 in the evening. Enjoyed flat water, a nice sunset, and a very uncrowded lake. For a Saturday night of the 4th of July weekend, it was a unfortunate to see that only about a dozen boats were fishing out of Holland. We didn't do very well, and only got one hook-up that was a 6 lb King. Every line was bringing in about 3 feet of "sea-flees" adding to our frustration. We fished mostly from 70 - 120 FOW.

A good report out of Port Sheldon came over the radio saying there was a lot of action in 80-85 FOW, taking 4 fish in a half hour period.

Another fisherman I spoke with didn't get a bite.

June 26

Went out on Tuesday 6/24. Fished 80 to 130 FOW and went 2 for 7. Both were 10+ pound fish and two nice fish got off after prolonged fights. No hits on flies or lead. All hits came on riggers or copper with spoons. Nice evening for fishing, marginal for catching but still a nice weather for being on the water. Captain Jim - The Fishing Poles.
June 10 I joined Jim on his boat this morning and we fished from 6:00-9:30. The lake was flat. We went 4 for 10. We boated 3 kings and 1 lake trout, and I personally lost 3 kings right behind the boat. Hits were taken on lead, dipsy's, and downriggers. Most of the Action was between 130 and 180 FOW and it really slowed down after 8AM. The fishing seems to be picking up.
June 3 Well, I finally found some fish. Jim and I ended up 7 out of 10, 6 small kings and a lake trout. Fish were caught between 100 and 185 feet. Most action was out deeper and around 70 down on the rigger. Only 1 hit on a dipsy and fly. We were fishing from 6:30 to 9:30.
June 1 Went out on friends boat Sunday AM 0600 to 1100. Fished 150 to 200 FOW and we managed to put five in the box and lost two. Four Kings and one steelhead. Fish came on lead, riggers, sliders and dipsys. Spoons and flies in a variety of different colors. Fish scattered throughout the depths fished. Capt. Jim
May 21 6-9 PM, 1 for 1 (small shaker). Fishing has been slow. We tried a lot of water from the pier heads out to 145 feet deep, but nothing was happening. Water is very cold, only 48 degrees on the surface. 1-2 foot waves, South wind, and no other boats were seen fishing out of Holland (unless they were out deep -- and that could be where the fish are).
May 13 At 8:30 pm, Kris and I released approximately 43,000 Chinook Salmon into lake macatawa. This stocking program is in partnership with the DNR and the Outdoor Discovery Center. The small kings had been kept in a net-pen at the marina for the past 4 weeks, being fed 3 times a day.
May 13 It was a great sunny afternoon for a fishing trip: No Waves, No Boats, No Flies, and NO FISH. I fished from 1:30-4:30 and covered depths from 60 - 190 FOW. Most action on the fish finder was between 120 and 130 feet.
May 10 Fished Saturday from 5 to 8 PM. Nice evening even though the water was in the low to mid 40's from top to bottom. Went 3 for 3 and several releases with no hook-ups, all kings. Fished 140 to 200' with best marks in 160-180 FOW. Dipsy's were quiet and all fish came on riggers and lead lines. All fish came on spoons with green and or white in the pattern. Saw several boat in shallower however do not know how successful they were. Capt Jim - The Fishing Poles.
May 8 Well, I finally got the lines wet, but the cooler stayed dry. We fished from 6:00-8:30 and didn't get anything to happen. There were 2-3 foot seas and the surface temp was reading 47 degrees. We fished 100-170 feet of water and marked fish in 130-140.
April 21

Its starting to look like summer and it's about time to start fishing again! I'll be putting the boat in the water soon, so look for a report in the next week or so. If anyone has a good report to post, send me an email at: wade@eldean.com
