  NEXT TRIP: Soon...
Sept. 23 Fished Sunday very early near the pier heads out to 45 feet. Set up in the dark and watched the sun rise with no luck (off the water by 8:00). Fished j-plugs, spoons and body baits. Several bumps and a couple of releases but nothing on the hooks. Spoke to others that ventured out to the 140's and they did no better out there. Water was in the high 60's from top to bottom everywhere we fished. Of the dozen or so boats fishing in the area, only saw one net go in the water the entire morning. Did have a great rest of the day at the beach with the family.... Capt. Jim - The Fishing Poles
Sept. 21 Jim and I fished from 6-9 in the channel, the pier heads, and out to 55 feet deep. No bites, no bumps, no fish.
Sept. 16 Report from Captain Jim: Made it out on Sunday morning. Tough day, fished close in pulling j-plugs, body baits and a couple of spoons. Started with a double and then a single in the first fifteen minutes and then it shut down. Lost a big sheephead later in the morning. Did poke out to the 50's and fished the channel later in the morning and fish were not biting in either place. Based on observations of other boats, it appeared the bite was early and quick. All three fish were mature and starting to darken in color. Capt. Jim - The Fishing Poles
Sept. 3 Jim, Lou (D-23), Brad (E-44) and I took a Labor Day fishing trip. Very Slow between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. We were 1 for 7, and with the exception of one king that sawed through the Fly leader, all the missed fish were just quick bumps and knock-offs. We mostly fished between 50 and 80 feet on a South Troll.
Aug. 29 Jim and I fished from 6:30 to 9:30 this morning and the action started right away, but slowed down by about 8AM. We ended 8 for 11 with 7 Kings, 1 Coho, and 1 Catfish. That's right, a 4 lb Catfish. We weren't even fishing that shallow. All the action came between 65-75 FOW. A blue bubble fly on a dipsy started off Hot taking the 1st 3 hits. Then the action switched to a bloody nose spoon on a downrigger. 2 kings were around 14 lbs and there were 2 small kings that got thrown back for next season. The Coho was pretty big -- about 8 lbs.
Aug. 18 Went out on Saturday AM in the brisk east wind & again in the PM in the cold driving rain. Fished in 70 to 100 FOW and put total of 13 fish in the boat (11 kings one steelie and one laker). Flies on dipseys & spoons on riggers and lead did well in the AM. In the PM it was all spoons on lead and riggers. The usual colors of greens, blues and whites worked best down 45 to 65 feet. Many boats were fishing shallower in AM however did not hear if they were successful (may have been in shallower to get out of the waves & wind offshore). Capt Jim - The Fishing Poles
Aug. 15 It was a slow night fishing. Went from 7:00-9:30 and were 2 for 5. One steelhead and one king were landed around 100-110 feet of water. There were A LOT of fish being marked in the 80-120 FOW and they were usually around 70 feet down. But we couldn't get them to bite. Spoons and flies both got hits.
Aug. 13 Briefly dropped lines during sunset. We had lines in for an hour , 8:30 - 9:30 PM from 100-150 FOW. Nothing happened until I got my last pole in the water. This was the only dipsy and only fly I had in the water, and it wasn't in the water long. This home-made light blue fly and blue fly catcher took 2 nice kings, back 175, set on 1. All the other spoons on lead and downriggers sat silent.
Aug. 9 I've heard that the fishing has been great lately! Lots of fish being caught and also a lot getting away. The salmon have moved out deeper with good reports from 140 - 170 FOW, and down 60-80 on the riggers.
July 24 Jim went out for an evening fish on 7/24. Fishing seemed slow but still ended going 4 for 6 with three kings and one laker. All fish in the 8 to 10 pound range, the laker was returned to nature unharmed. Surface temperature in the 60's with 40's down deep everywhere we fished. Allot of talk about fish in the shallow water although we had no luck going as shallow as 55 feet. All fish came in 70 feet or deeper. Downriggers were quiet with all fish on dipsys and leadcore with flies and spoons. Greens and blues worked best. Capt. Jim - The Fishing Poles.

Kris and I went for a boat ride in the evening and dropped a few lines in order to get a fresh fish to smoke for Saturdays Shipyard party. We accomplished our goal quickly and ended with a 14lb King coming 125 back on a dipsy with a light blue fly. This fish took out 475 feet more of line before it stopped. Unfortunately, it wasn't the monster I thought it was when I realized that somehow it didn't release the dipsy. We also missed a nice tail-dancer on lead line. During its acrobatic display it spit the hook. We were in 75-95 FOW.

Reports (radio and people I've spoke with) have fish being caught everywhere: Near the pierheads and out to 140 FOW.

July 17

It's been a while since the last report, but I had to rest up after catching all those fish. It was a good thing to, because once again, the fish were biting and they were all pretty big! We fished from 7:30-9:30 PM and went 8 for 13. There were 7 Kings and 1 Brown Trout. The biggest king was 16 pounds and the smallest was 5 pounds. Fish were only biting on the port side of the boat and usually on a South troll. Most of the action was in 80 FOW and fish were biting on dipsys, lead, and down riggers. A bloody nose and a blueberry muffin sandwich (?) spoons got multiple hits. A light blue fly also worked well.

A morning report from a customer at the marina had fish in 110 - 130 FOW, and 50-70 Down. He caught several 4 year olds going 15-20 lbs.

July 5 Big Lake...Big Fish...Big Day! Captain Jim, California Dave, and I couldn't stop catching fish this morning. We fished from 7-10AM, and after 3 hours we had our 3 person limit on Kings. We ended 9 for 17 and had over 90 pounds of fish in the box. The biggest went 15 and the majority were 10-12 lbs with the smallest weighing in at 5. Around 9:30, we each had dipsy and fly combo go screaming out. During this triple, a lead line went off and after I boated my fish, I had a good fight on the lead line but I ended up loosing it right behind the boat (we did boat all three of the original triple header). Lead lines caught 4 fish, dipsys caught 4, and the biggest fish was off the downrigger. The regular colors were working, the lake was flat, and the sun was shining. Good luck in the tournament this weekend!
June 26 Taipei Paully and I took a quick trip out after work. We fished the less than ideal time from 5:45-7:45 PM and the action was slow. We ended 1 for 2, but the 1 we caught was worth the trip. This 12 lb steelhead hit up high on the slider, and broke through the water instantly, throwing itself 4 to 5 feet out of the water. It did this several more times, each time with the same height and force. It came on a double orange crush in 93 feet of water.
June 24 Report from Captain Jim: Fished Sunday evening 6/24 with the boys and neighbor Tim. Went 5 for 8 with four kings and a nice steelhead. Most came on spoons in the usual colors of green and blue in 85 to 110 FOW, 45 to 68 feet down. Did get one on a dipsey & fly setup dialed in at three 155 back and one on full lead core. Fish were on the bigger side with the largest topping 14 lbs on the scale.
June 21 We fished from 6-9PM in 2-5 foot waves. It was pretty sporty and we only saw 2 other boats out fishing. There was a ton of bait fish marked and a lot of good marks on the fish finder, but the action was slow. We ended 3 for 4. Chad got a nice 8 lb Steelhead on a light blue home-made fly, on the dypsy, about 150 back. Dean (slip z-40) caught 2 kings, both on down riggers--lemon ice and double orange crush. 80-110 FOW seemed like a good place to be.
June 17 It was a great Father's Day Trip. Jim and I went 6 for 8, fishing from 6-10 AM. The best fishing was between 80-100 FOW. Most action was on spoons, both on lead and down riggers. No particular spoon was working better than another, however green was common in a few hits. The only fish coming on a fly was worth the wait. It was a nice 15 pound King, that took out a bunch of line and put up a good fight. In total, there were 5 kings and 1 Brown caught. There were no waves on the water but there were a lot of biting flies to deal with.
June 12 Well, I had a full boat of guys ready to catch their limits of Salmon last night. Unfortunately, I couldn't deliver under pressure. We only boated 1 King in 140 feet of water. We fished all over, from 75-185 FOW, but couldn't find many marks and ended 1 of 3, fishing from 6:15-9:15 PM. We had a little two boat tournament going on with "The Fishing Poles", and it was close. Captain Jim, from The Fishing Poles only took one fish too. Since his was bigger, he won the trophy.
June 10 I haven't left the slip for a while. However, my Lake Macatawa fishing report is: Bass, Sheephead, perch, bluegill, and catfish are biting on worms, night-crawlers, and minnows. My 5 year old niece, with her kids pole, out did me. She caught a nice 18" Smallmouth Bass on her minnow and bobber set up.
June 4 Report from "On the Edge" (Slip A-1): I went out today to about 215’ came back and the rigger went off at 95’ got 2 more around 80’ 62 down. I found a big temp break there. 45 degree at 62’ 46.5 at 61’ and 43.5 at 63’.
May 30 It was such a beautiful morning that I took a detour from work and headed out fishing. I fished from 8:15-10:15. Unfortunately, this solo outing was a bit unproductive. I set lines in 180 feet and fished out to 215 and back without anything happening. I decided to give up and head back in, but wanted to see if shallower waters had fish. I did end up taking 2 hits in 165 FOW and ended 1 for 2, with a 5 lb King coming 75 down on a blue dolphin magnum. The other hit was a green dolphin on the lead line, and a swivel malfunction (user error) caused that one to take my lure.

May 25

I had a full crew today. There was enough action for Gus, Dave, Jim and I, but it was a little slow considering the amount of lines in the water. We ended 5 for 11, and had a hard time getting the fish hooked well. Lead lines took most of the action and Michael Jackson, Lemon Ice, and a glow Green Dolphin worked well. We fished from 8 AM to Noon and were all over the 170 to 210 foot range. Fish were very scattered. We ended with 2 Steelhead, 2 kings, and 1 Lake Trout that was a little bit over 10 lbs. It looks like I'll have enough meat for fish tacos at our Memorial Day Party.

May 22 Well it was too nice of a morning not to go fishing. I went out a little late and fished from 8:45-12:30. It was great day; Sunny, warm, and flat water! I ended 6 for 12, 5 kings and 1 Coho. I finally used the net so I could get in a big 14 lb king. The others were nice fish, about 3-6 lbs each. I was in 180-195 feet of water. Almost all action was on a south troll. The fish didn't seem to be biting when heading back North. I had good results with a light blue fly, a gold and white fly with a red head (These were fresh, homemade flies--the store bought varieties just don't taste as good; too many preservatives). Also working were Green Dolphin and Lemon Ice spoons.
May 21 I Fished from 5:30-8 PM. There was a little action and I ended 3 for 6, all King Salmon. The hot set up was small Green Dolphin on a full lead core, it took 3 hits and boated 2 fish. A light blue fly also took one off a dipsy, 150 back set on 1. I fished from 150-205 feet deep with hits coming at all depths.
May 20 I joined Captain Jim aboard the "Fishing Poles" and it was a perfect day for catching fish--Cold, rough water, wet (from the waves), and early. Unfortunately, the rough water and my seasickness kicked us off the lake before we could put one in the box. We stayed around 165-180 FOW and we were 0 for 2 and fished from 6:30-8:30 AM. Then I puked...
May 18 Well, I started a little late this year, but I finally made it out to enjoy the sun and flat water today. I fished from 9:30 to 12:30 and went 1 for 1. The king that hit came 125 back on a dipsy with a home made, clearish colored fly. I tried about every color spoon I had on the downrigger and lead line, but no hits. There were a lot of boats out and by the chatter on the radio, people were catching a few fish today, mostly in 170-175 feet of water. I tried between 125 and 185, and hooked up in 165.
March 24 Capt. Jim made it out on the lake off Saugatuck for the first time this year on Saturday. Fished with two man rod limit from 7:00 to 10:00 AM with no action in extremely heavy fog and light rain. Blue water was in the high 30's and brown water in the low 40's. Brown water was flowing heavy from the river and very muddy with a lot of floating debris. Marked a lot of bait at all depths with most fish marks around 20' or deeper. Washed spoons, body baits and even a few flies and could not get anything going. Did see two fish caught on the piers by the guys fishing what appeared to be spawn on the bottom when we were going out and coming in. Was still good to get out for a shakedown trip on the new boat. Capt Jim - The Fishing Poles..
