The Fishing Report

These fishing reports are from Wade Eldean aboard "Rhino" a 47' Wellcraft Excalibur. Reports are out of Holland Harbor, Macatawa, Michigan.

9-03-03 Sorry, No reports to add. We tried to get out one more time, but the thunderstorms kept us from fishing last week. Even though the fish are still biting, I think my fishing season is over (it really was a great one!) Be sure to check back in May of next year for weekly reports.
8-21-03 I decided to turn my group around this morning. Waves were 3-6 and it would have been an uncomfortable fishing trip.
8-19-03 My sister Kori and I fished from 6:30-9:30 this morning. She caught a nice 9 lb. King right away, 55 down on a green dolphin glow spoon in 135 ft of water. Shortly after, I thought we had a bump but there wasn't a release or any action on the line. However, when going to change the baits on the down rigger over an hour later, we found a 3 lb. King hanging on to a orange w/ yellow spoon. Unfortunately, dragging that little fellow around didn't help us catch any more fish. We did pick up one more small King in 100 ft. water on dipsy, 200 back with a white fish catcher and light blue fly. It hit hard as we were making a sharp turn. We were 3 for 3 in the end. A great morning on the water.
8-16-03 It was supposed to be a birthday fishing trip with my sister and her boyfriend, but east coast power outages delayed arrivals and I was left fishing solo this moring. I started at 45 feet of water at 6:30 AM and finally at about 8:30 I picked up a nice 17 lb King in 165 feet of water. Trolling back east at 155 feet, I picked up another good King that was about 8 lbs. Both fish came 85 feet down on a silver spoon with one yellow edge, one orange edge, and yellow and white tape. I stopped at 9:30 and ended 2 for 2. It sounded like most everyone was having a difficult time finding the fish this morning.
8-14-03 Fishing alone this morning from 6:30-10:00 I went 3 for 6. Got hits in 80-100 ft of water. All were kings, 4-6 lbs. 2 were taken on a light blue fly behind a dipsy 180 back. The Pupkinseed Glow took the other king 50 down. Again I heard reports of a lot of fish being caught 55-65 feet of water, but I didn't generate any action each time I passed through those depths.
8-13-03 My sister Kori and I went 4 for 5 this morning fishing from 7:00-9:30. Good action the first half hour when we got 3 kings in 80-85 foot of water. 3 of 5 hits were on a Pumkinseed Glow spoon down 50 feet. The other 2 were on dipsies with fish catcher and flies (one lihgt blue glow and one green and gold). The fish were small, 3-7 lbs.
8-9-03 We fished the Holland Fish and Game Salmon Tournament this morning. We had a hard time finding the fish and ended the day 3 for 4: One 5 lb Laker, one 5 lb Coho, and one 16 lb King. We finished 7th of 17 boats. Its always the case of "The One That Got Away," but really, the one that got away was huge. It nearly pulled Bill overboard before breaking the line. We found fish between 80 and 110. Later we heard that two of the winning boats caught up to 7 fish each in 50-65 foot a water.
8-7-03 It was a very frustrating day for BILL DEWITT and I as we went 1 for 5 fishing from 6-10:30 AM. We had one break the line and take the dipsy, fish catcher, snubber, and fly. Another good King broke the fly leader on its way in. The King we boated was a 6 lbs. Spoons were working well early off the down rigger 50-65 down and later in the morning the green flys were taking hits 200 back on the dipsies. We saw action in 80-100 feet of water.
8-03-03 It was a fantastic morning to be fishing! Great weather and 2-3 foot waves. The Rhino went 6 for 8. My buddy Chad boated 5 of them. In total, 4 kings(each 8-12 lbs) and 2 Steelheads(6 and 8 lbs). We ran four poles, 2 downriggers (55-75 down) and 2 dipsies (200-220 back). The dipsy's got 3 fish on white flies behind both white and green fish catchers. A variety of spoons containing green picked up the other three fish. Unfortunately again, a big King left with my Blue dolphin spoon today. We worked the 95-130 foot water and would get a hit every half hour or so between 6:00-10:00 AM.
7-31-03 The Rhino did a little better this morning going 4 for 6, though it was a painful start. Started at 6 AM and had two big kings break the line. First on a Green Dolphin Magnum and Second on a Glow Green Dolphin, both in 90-100 feet of water and 60 down on the down rigger. (I must have had some bad line in the water.) I continued to fish 90-130 feet of water just north of Holland and caught 3 kings 4-7 lbs and one small coho. One king and the coho came on light blue glow fly (home made) on a dipsy 210 back. The other two Kings came on a Blue Dolphin and Greasy Chicken wing on the down riggers (75 and 55 down).
7-29-03 Fish 5, Rhino 3. The fish may have won today but the Rhino boated 3 of 8 and had a very exciting morning. Spoons on downriggers worked best. 50 feet down working from 90-120 feet of water. Early hits were on a Green Dolphin Magnum and later a Greasy Chicken Wing generated 3 hits (one in the box). Unfortunately, a big king took this one with him. A light blue glow fly caugt two kings, each about 5 lbs.
